Bald Eagles on the Potomac

By Lance Winslow

Some people think that Bald Eagles should be on the endangered species list, but if you ever boat along the Potomac there are hundreds of them and they seem to enjoy it there and to live well near the Nation's Capital. Perhaps this is why The Bald Eagle has been made our National Bird, because our founding fathers saw tons of them in that area. Indeed, they have probably lived there longer than our country has been in existence.

There are many state parks and areas around Washington, DC, which are wildlife areas and in those areas there are all types of birds and species that are quite abundant that you do not see everywhere else. The wildlife along the Potomac is spectacular and The Bald Eagles are magnificent and you can just see their raw power when they fly. It appears that The Bald Eagle does symbolize strength in the bird world, as it is a highly evolved species adapted for its environment.

Perhaps you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the national Bird to be the Turkey and although this is rather funny in hindsight it is very interesting that we call most politicians; Turkeys. Of course the politicians deserve to be called turkeys, but that is rather mean-spirited and should bear no reflection on the Wild Turkey. So, no offense to the Turkey. Please consider all this in 2006.
